Sharing information In my contacts with representatives of trade and industry, I have often been confronted with the fact that in these circles there is some doubt as to whether Marine insurers are sufficiently communicative in respect of the assessment of risks, terms of contracts, premiums quoted and measures taken for the improvement of insurance results. appels - 'snoep verstandig, neem een appel', meldde een aanwij- zingsbord - waren weggevlogen. Snel werd, toen de hele voorraad op was, voor nieuwe aanvoer ge-zorgd. ( gezorgd. ) Er werden vele verrassings-pakketten ( verrassingspakketten ) uitgedeeld. Daarin zat een RVS-verjaardagskalender, een balpen, enige folders (aan voor-lichting ( voorlichting ) moet ook iets worden ge-daan), ( gedaan), ) een pakje Stimerol, een rol pepermunt, een SWS-sponsje en een RVS-kleurboekje. Dat was niet alles. De dames van de heer Verhoeven: mevrouw Van de Wetering, Ellen Wakker, Ilse Bol-linger ( Bollinger ) zorgden ervoor dat ieder-een ( iedereen ) werd voorzien van koffie, thee, een jaffa drink en appels. Uiteraard naar keuze. Van de deelnemers werd ook een pres-tatie ( prestatie ) verwacht. Dat was door de orga-nisatoren ( organisatoren ) voorgeschreven. ■ I think it can be taken for granted that, ir-respective ( irrespective ) of class, creed, colour or nationali-ty. ( nationality. ) there is a longing in all of us to celebrate special occasions in the company of ‘oor ain folk’. To a Scot, surely such an occasion is the last night of the year, New Year’s Eve; of course a Scot would not call it that, but rather by the strange name of ‘Hogmanay’. Why should the last night of the year be given such a name which is of doubtful meaning and of unknown origin? Historians are unable to explain and even Encyclopaedia Britannica does not offer much help. It would seem that Hogmanay was originally a pagan festival dur-ing ( during ) which it was the custom to exchange gifts. The old quotation ‘Get up guid wife and gie’s oor Hogmanay’ would seem to confirm this. In ancient times man’s very existence depend-ed ( depended ) on nature, and the changing seasons, and therefore the lengthening daylight was a cause for rejoicing. Man’s actions and the natural events at this time of the year were considered to have an important influence on what happened during the year ahead. This perhaps accounts for the large number of superstitions and traditions associated with Hogmanay and the New Year. As Christmas is to the English, so Hogmanay is to the Scots - a time for reunion and jollifi-cation, ( jollification, ) not to be missed for strengthening family ties and 'to bring in the New Year’ toge-ther. ( together. ) Those in the neighbourhood, perhaps on their own, the elderly and the 'stranger within the gate’ are not forgotten and there is a ready welcome for all. In small communities the real meaning and spirit of Hogmanay is demonstrated, and Scottish hospitality is at its best.
