Documents of general character and documents relating to specific subjects, activities and functions
Zeeman's papers have been divided into those of a general character, i.e., relating to several aspects of Zeeman's life and activities, those regarding his personal life and education and those concerning his professional activities.
The subdivisions within 'Personal life and education' are chronological: childhood, student years and adulthood. The year 1885, when Zeeman began his physics studies in Leiden and the year 1895, when he married Johanna Lebret, form the actual division dates. These two years also mark a change from an archivistic point of view. The documents dating from before 1885 were not systematically preserved. From 1885 on, however, Zeeman began to take care of his personal papers, including assembling his first scientific files. In 1895, Zeeman adopted the record keeping system which he continued to use until his death.
For the subdivisions within the section on Zeeman's professional activities the suggestions made in Joan Haas's et al. 'Appraising the Records of Modern Science and Technology' * were used.
Documents resulting from Zeeman's duties as a University functionary were grouped in section 2.2.1 'Teaching and administering'.
The documents relating to his scientific research were placed in a separate section (2.2.2) and writings and lectures on his results were included.

Under 'Secondary activities' (2.2.3) those documents that resulted from Zeeman's other public activities, mostly board- and committee memberships were grouped.
Documents relating to Zeeman's awards and honors were placed in a separate section (2.2.4), as were documents relating to Zeeman's position as emeritus professor (2.2.5), which mainly document his concern with the appointment of a successor.
