  • Inventaris of plaatsingslijst
  • Eventueel bijlagen

    Biography
Machiel Wolff was born on 9 March 1904 in The Hague as the only child of Moses Wolff (The Hague, 16 December 1869) and Rosalie Wolff-Van Lier (The Hague, 18 May 1871). Machiel Wolff studied law in the twenties, probably in Leiden. On 29 July 1934 he married his cousin Felicia (Fifi) van Lier (London, 13 November 1902). She was the daughter of Simon van Lier (The Hague, 21 March 1878) and Flora van Lier-Manheim (Alkmaar, 8 June 1877). After their marriage Machiel Wolff and Felicia Wolff-Van Lier settled in Goor, Overijssel. Here Wolff had an office, first at home on the Deldenscheweg 42, from July until December 1937 at the Grootstraat in Goor and then he received clients at home again. In 1939 the couple moved to a house on the Deldenscheweg 82. On 7 June 1939 the couple had a daughter, Ruth Flora Rosalie Wolff. Wolff was mobilised in Utrecht from 25 August 1939 until 10 June 1940.
Wolff was chairman of the Dutch Israeli Church Association in Goor from 1938-1943 for certain. In that capacity he organised support for foreign refugees. Not much later the Committee for Jewish Refugees in Goor was established, for which Wolff was chairman.

Early October 1941 Wolff was asked by S.N. Menko, the recently appointed chairman of the Jewish Council in Enschede, to become the main representative of the Jewish Council in Goor, Markelo and Diepenheim. In July 1941 Wolff was already given some authority by the Central Bureau for the Jewish Council in Amsterdam.

The couple Wolff-Van Lier was probably arrested in April 1943 and deported to Westerbork. From there they were deported to Auschwitz on 24 August 1943. Felicia Wolff-Van Lier was killed on 27 August 1943. Machiel Wolff's date of death is mentioned as 27 August 1943 in the register of the War Graves Foundation. The Red Cross established that Machiel Wolff was registered as a convict. Furthermore, it is certain that he was hospitalised with tuberculosis at the Krankenbau in Monowitz on 20 April 1944. Based on that, he died at the end of April 1944: latest date of death is 30 April 1944 in Auschwitz. Their daughter survived the war.
